CellarPro Mini Split 3000S-EC Cooling Unit #1713
CellarPro's Mini-Split 3000S-EC cooling units (1/4 Ton Nominal) are suitable for wine cellars up to 600 cubic feet in both commercial and residential wine cellars. The 600 cubic feet cellar size assumes that the cellar is constructed with insulation of R19 or better in all walls and ceiling (ie no glass or uninsulated concrete), the cooling unit is not ducted, a setpoint of 55F inside the cellar and ambient temperatures up to 85F outside the cellar.
Performance testing shows that this unit maintains optimal cellar temperature and humidity conditions in extreme conditions up to 110F more effectively than similar units from competing brands. 3000S-EC units use energy-efficient EC fans in the evaporator and are significantly quieter than comparable units from other brands. - CellarPro Mini-Split 3000S-EC units are designed to be installed with the evaporator inside the cellar, and the condensing unit in a remote location.
- Our Split refrigeration systems offer a choice of wiring:
- The Condensing unit can be electronically controlled by and wired to the Evaporator (single power source on the Evaporator side). This configuration allows the Condensing unit to be used in temperatures down to 20F with the addition of our compressor heater, or down to -20F with the addition of our fan cycling switch AND compressor heater. This configuration requires a 15-amp dedicated circuit breaker for 3000S-EC and 4000S systems, and a 25-amp dedicated circuit breaker for 6000S and 8000S systems.
- The Condensing unit can be controlled by a Solenoid valve (dual power source, one each to the Evaporator and Condensing units.) This configuration allows the Condensing unit to be used in temperatures down to 20F with the addition of our compressor heater. This configuration requires the evaporator to be wired to a 15-amp circuit breaker, and the condensing unit to be wired to a dedicated 15-amp circuit breaker for 3000S-EC and 4000S systems, a dedicated 20-amp circuit breaker for 6000S systems, and a dedicated 25-amp circuit breaker for 8000S systems
- 3000S-EC evaporators can be located remotely from the cellar with the addition of one of our front duct packages. Offered with or without insulated flex ducting, in a choice of configurations for low or high humidity conditions, our front duct packages allow these cooling units to be ducted up to 50 equivalent feet away from the cellar and requires 8-inch (or greater) ducting from start to finish.
- When calculating equivalent feet, each 90-degree turn counts for 8 feet.
- When the control panel is difficult to access, we offer a remote control display kit which is wired to the cooling unit and allows the digital display to be mounted inside or outside the cellar.
- The condensing unit requires 12 inches of unobstructed space in front of the coils, and requires approx. 600-700 CFM of ventilation when installed in a confined space.
- For outdoor installations, we offer an outdoor hood to protect the condensing unit from weather. All outdoor hoods include a compressor heater.
- The evaporator should never be exposed to temperatures below 32F.
- Access to the left and right side of the evaporator unit is required for installation.
- All split systems must be installed and charged on site by a qualified HVAC professional. Line-set equivalent feet must be calculated in accordance with ASHRAE guidelines; refer to our Line Sizing Chart for more information.
- A CellarPro cooling unit must always be used in the upright position, and should never be operated on its side or upside down.
- We ship these units strapped to a pallet via common carrier with curbside delivery. Inside delivery is available for an additional charge.

Our cooling units are designed to be used in properly-constructed wine cellars that are adequately insulated, airtight and sealed with a vapor barrier. In improperly-constructed cellars, the cooling unit will create excess condensation, leading to damage and premature failure of your cooling unit (not covered by warranty).
All air-cooled refrigeration equipment requires fresh air intake to dissipate the heat generated by the cooling unit. The fresh air intake CANNOT come from the wine cellar space - it must come from space outside the cellar.

CellarPro Replacement Unit Program
If your CellarPro cooling unit fails and the parts that failed are still covered by warranty, we'll send a replacement cooling unit to you, as follows:
- Your cooling unit must be registered at CellarPro
- Your cooling unit must have been properly sized, installed and maintained
- Your cooling unit may not have been permanently modified, damaged or disfigured
- Replacement units are factory-refurbished cooling units with a similar build date as your original unit
- You are responsible for the shipping cost to send the replacement unit to you and return the original unit to us, and the cost (if any) to remove the original unit and install the replacement unit
- In order to send a replacement unit, we require a deposit, which will be refunded minus shipping costs upon the return and pending the inspection of the original unit
- If the original unit failed due to improper intallation or use, the failure is not covered by warranty and we will deduct the cost of the repairs from the refund of your deposit
A: You should always use Sensible BTUH* when comparing different brands of cooling units, and when sizing a cooling unit for your wine cellar. Every cooling unit produces a certain amount of Total BTUH, which is the sum of Sensible BTUH (lowers the temperature) and Latent BTUH (lowers the relative humidity). Because our goal is to cool wine cellars while preserving humidity, wine cellar cooling units should have high Sensible BTUH and low Latent BTUH. The relationship between Sensible and Latent BTUHs is know as SHR (Sensible Heat Ratio), which is calculated as Sensible BTUH/Total BTUH. The SHR for CellarPro cooling units is greater than 90%, which means that CellarPro units provide maximum cooling power without stripping out humidity from the cellar environment.
*CellarPro Sensible BTUHs are calculated assuming 55F cellar temperature, 60% relative humidity and 95F ambient for all units except 1800 units (85F ambient).
What's the difference between a split system and "through the wall" or "self-contained" systems?
A: Split systems are "split" into two parts: the cold side (evaporator) which usually is installed inside the cellar, and the hot side (condensing unit) which is installed away from the cellar. The benefit of having this split is that the heat and noise from the condensing unit can be located far away from living spaces where it won't interfere with day-to-day life.
Are split systems more difficult to install than self-contained systems?
A: Yes. Split systems require installation by a licensed HVAC technician, whereas a self-contained unit can be mounted through-the-wall and is shipped fully charged and operational out of the box.
What's the difference between valve control and electronic control? Which is better?
A: The biggest difference between valve and electronic control is that, with electronic control, the condensing unit receives power directly from the evaporator, whereas with vavle control, the condensing unit is independently powered, and turns on/off based on the solenoid valve. Valve control is more common in the industry, and benefits from not having to run a power line from the evaporator to the condensing unit, but we do not recommend valve control for installations in temperatures below 30°F. Electronic control offers more precision, and allows the condensing unit to be placed in temperatures down to -20°F (with the addition of a compressor heater and fan cycling switch.)
Can the evaporator be located in a remote location and ducted to/from the wine cellar?
A: These evaporators can be ducted up to 50 equivalent feet away from the wine cellar when used with our cold-side (front) duct hoods and kits. Remember that cold-side ducting must be insulated and additional load should be added to properly size the required cooling unit.
Can I use the low fan speed setting on the cooling unit when the unit is ducted?
A: Duct hoods and kits create additional static pressure and therefore require the use of the high fan speed to overcome the additional static pressure.
Can I install the entire unit inside the cellar?
A: No, the condensing unit must be located outside the cellar.
If I don't have sufficient space around the condensing unit, is that Ok?
A: The condensing unit generates hot air that must have sufficient space to dissipate, otherwise the unit will recycle its own hot air. The condensing unit cannot be ducted; it requires 12 inches of unobstructed space in front of the coils, and requires approx. 600-700 CFM of ventilation when installed in a confined space.
Does the evaporator include flare connections, or will I need to braze the connections to the line-set?
A: Flare connections are much more prone to leaks, and have been phased out over the years, replaced by fully-brazed connections. This is driven by the EPA and the focus on minimizing refrigerant leaks into the atmosphere.
We want to put a wood grill in front of the evaporator, what is the percentage of air flow that grill will need to have?
A: Our units require 1/2" minimum spacing, as well as a baffle behind the grill to separated the cold air discharge from the coil intake. We have seen problems with custom grills where there is a gap between the unit and the grill and it causes air circulation behind the grill resulting in coil icing. It is also important to note that the evaporator must be mounted to the interior cellar wall, not buried inside the wall. If it is buried inside the wall, the housing will require insulation, otherwise condensation and heat loss issues will occur.
Does the unit really need a dedicated circuit?
A: First, the background. Unlike our competitors, we build our cooling units with precision expansion valves, not cap tubes, which means that our cooling units aren't limited to a 30°F differential between the desired cellar temperature and the ambient temperature. Cooling systems with expansion valves are much more precise than cap tubes, and much more sensitive to low voltage conditions, which is why our units require dedicated circuits. When we say "dedicated circuit", we mean that the circuit shouldn't have any items that require heavy draws of electricity - eg other appliances, vacuum cleaners, big-screen TVs, blow-dryers - on the same circuit as the cooling unit. Lighting, computers or other low-draw items shouldn't be a problem on the same circuit.

Nothing But Trouble in Cold Weather

We purchased our CellarPro 3000s split system about 18 months ago to cool our new wine cellar. The unit was professionally installed, tested and found to meet factory installation specifications. The unit performed wonderfully until winter arrived. Last winter (2013-2014) it took about five service calls to get the unit functioning properly. Now that the 2014-2015 winter is upon us, the unit has failed again. Note that we have used professional HVAC installers and electricians throughout this process, added heating tape as recommended by tape as recommended by the factory, and jumped through various other hoops. Unfortunately - here we go with more disappointing performance. Time to call for service AGAIN. Take my advice: If you live in cold weather - don't buy this unit.
Reply from CellarPro: Thank you for your feedback. We recommend our Electronic Control configuration, not Valve Control, for temperatures that drop below 0 degrees. Your unit's configuration (valve control) is not designed for the extreme cold conditions that you experience in Minnesota.
Exceeded Our Expectations
We purchased our CellarPro 3000s split system about 2 years ago and its quality and performance has exceeded our expectations.
Prior to the CellarPro, we used a thru-the wall unit(s) that never did the job adequately or consistent cooling.
We have a small room (200 bottles) and waited about 10 years of continuous research before finding and purchasing the CellarPro 3000S.
We live in south Florida, a humid sub-tropical climate and our AC subcontractor was able to install the unit, cleans/maintains the unit with our normal service.
Because of my wife’s preference, we moved the compressor unit to the attic. We were skeptical that it would operate in attic temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for an extended summer period.
The unit has operated without a problem.
