When a collection has grown past what a kitchen cooler can responsibly hold but a full cellar build isn't in the plans, the Le Cache 1400 Classic fills that gap without compromise. At 31 inches wide and 72 inches tall, it holds 172 bottles in a footprint that works in an apartment, a dining room alcove or a second home — and its CellarPro cooling unit actively manages both temperature and humidity, which is what separates a true wine cabinet from a refrigerator dressed up for bottles. The rich Cherry wood veneer and gently arched glass door give it a presence that reads as furniture, not appliance.

What matters for long-term aging is what happens inside. Foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation and double-pane tinted glass hold the environment steady against ambient heat and UV. The all-wood interlock racks carry 160 bottles in 3.8-inch slots sized to fit oversized Burgundy and Rhône formats, with additional bulk space for another dozen. SB/0™ technology allows the cabinet to sit flush against the wall with top-vent exhaust, so placement isn't constrained by clearance requirements on three sides. The digital thermostat, adjustable humidity control and audible alarms give you the same feedback loop you'd expect from a purpose-built cellar.

Best For

  • A collection of 100–172 bottles that has outgrown a countertop cooler and needs active humidity management for long-term aging
  • Placing a serious storage unit in a dining room, apartment or second home where floor space is limited but climate control cannot be sacrificed
  • Collectors with oversized bottles — large-format Burgundy, Rhône or Napa — who need racking slots wide enough to actually fit them
  • Integrating a freestanding cabinet against a wall without leaving a clearance gap at the back
  • SB/0™ Zero-Clearance Placement: The top-vent exhaust system allows the cabinet to sit flush against a wall with no rear or side clearance required — a practical advantage when fitting a 72" tall unit into a finished room without dedicated alcove space.
  • Foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation: Higher R-value per inch than standard foam, which reduces thermal load on the compressor and contributes to quieter, less frequent compressor cycles in ambient conditions up to the rated thermal load.
  • Double-pane tinted glass: Filters UV light to protect labels and wine from light degradation while still allowing the collection to be viewed without opening the door.
  • Adjustable Humidity Control with Energy-Saver and Quick-Chill modes: The CellarPro unit manages both temperature and humidity actively — not just temperature — which matters for corks and long-term aging. Quick-Chill brings a new bottle down to serving temperature faster; Energy-Saver reduces compressor activity during stable ambient conditions.
  • Universal all-wood interlock racks with 3.8" slots: The slot width accommodates oversized Burgundy and Champagne bottles alongside standard Bordeaux formats. Racks are all-wood, which avoids the vibration transfer that metal wire racks can introduce from the compressor.
  • Audible and visual alarms notify of temperature excursions without requiring you to check a display — useful when the cabinet is in a less-trafficked room.
  • Stainless bar pull with keyed security lock
  • Low-heat interior LED lighting
  • Cooling unit warranty is separate from the cabinet: 5 years on the CellarPro cooling unit and 2 years on the cabinet itself. An extended warranty is available at purchase. Three CellarPro unit configurations (QTL, QT, XT) are offered to match the thermal load of your installation environment.

Pairs Well With

  • The optional bottle probe accessory, which allows the CellarPro unit to monitor and display the actual temperature inside a bottle rather than air temperature — relevant if you are aging wines that require tight temperature precision over years.

What These Specs Mean

  • Running vs. Startup Amps: The compressor draws 14.2–20.1 amps for a fraction of a second on startup before settling to a continuous 2.4–3.0 amps — your circuit breaker must be rated to handle the inrush surge without tripping, even though the steady-state load is low.
  • Cooling Unit Selection (QTL / QT / XT): The three CellarPro options differ in cooling capacity and noise output; the QTL-ECX operates at the lowest amp draw and quietest sound level, while the XT-ECX provides the greatest thermal headroom for warmer or less insulated rooms — use the Thermal Load Calculator to match the unit to your specific installation environment.

PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

POWER REQUIREMENT:
The power cord extends 6 1/2 feet from the rear of the cabinet. If an extension cord is used, it should be 14-gauge wire or thicker, grounded, and as short as possible.

The cooling unit plugs into a standard grounded wall outlet. We recommend adding a surge protector, rated at 15 amps or more (for example, click here), to protect the cooling unit from power surges.

The outlet must be on a dedicated circuit. The components of the cooling unit draw 3 amps, and the electric outlet on the side of the cooling unit also is rated for 3 amps. The cooling unit should not, under any circumstances, share a circuit with another motor or compressor-based appliance, like a wine cooler, fridge, air conditioner, or garage opener.

FLOOR SURFACE
Because of the significant weight of your wine cabinet, it is important that it be placed on a hard surface; otherwise, the cabinet may become skewed if the doors settle unevenly over time. If you will be placing your cabinet on thick carpeting, consider placing a carpet board underneath the wine cabinet. You can purchase a carpet board from Le Cache, or you can have your local hardware store cut a 3/4 inch plywood board to the following dimensions: 45w x 25d (inches).

DOOR SWING CLEARANCE
The doors of our wine cabinets swing wide by approximately 1 inch when open at 90 degrees. The additional width should be accounted for when purchasing cabinets that do not have moldings because the stated widths of our wine cabinets do not account for the door swing. Please note that the additional width is required in front of the cabinet.

WEIGHT LOAD FACTOR
After loading your wine cabinet with wine bottles, it will be extremely heavy. When selecting a location for your cabinet, make sure that the floor underneath is strong enough to support the weight of the cabinet.

TEMPERATURE REQUIREMENTS
CellarPro cooling units are designed to handle temperatures ranging from 50 to 95F.

VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS
The cooling unit generates hot air that must be exhausted in such a way that it won't be recirculated by the cooling unit. If the hot air cannot be dissipated or channeled properly, and the cooling unit is forced to recycle its own hot air, the cooling unit will be unable to maintain cold temperatures inside the wine cabinet and/or will overheat and/or will run all the time. Proper ventilation can be achieved in one of three ways:

  • 1. UPRIGHT CABINETS WITH TOP-VENT CONFIGURATIONS
Our upright wine cabinets have been engineered with top-vent cooling units and SB/0 Technology so that they can be placed right up against the wall. In this configuration, the hot air generated by the cooling unit is ventilated through the top of the wine cabinet, and the return air comes from above the wine cabinet, so there must be clearance above and to the sides of the cabinets for the hot air to dissipate, as follows:
    • Contemporary wine cabinets, Carolina wine cabinets, Loft wine cabinets, Vault wine cabinets and a Semi-Custom wine cabinets require 18 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet.
    • European Country wine cabinets and Mission wine cabinets require 12 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet.
    • The sides always need to be open - in other words, placement in a corner, enclosed space, alcove, or closet will not work without our front-vent hood (see Configuration 3 below).
  • 2. UPRIGHT CABINETS WITH Rear-Vent Configurations
Our upright wine cabinets can be configured so that the return air comes from behind the wine cabinet. This configuration is useful in situations where sufficient clearance around the wine cabinet doesn't exist. In this configuration:
    • If the rear of the wine cabinet is not accessible, a minimum clearance of 7 1/2 inches above the wine cabinet is required for removal and replacement of the cooling unit air filter.
    • If the rear of the wine cabinet is accessible, a minimum clearance of 3 inches above the wine cabinet is required for proper airflow, and we recommend using our air deflector to direct the hot air exhaust to the left of the wine cabinet.
    • In all cases, the wine cabinet must be placed 3-4 inches away from the rear wall.
    • The sides always need to be open - in other words, placement in a corner, enclosed space, alcove, or closet will not work without our front-vent hood (see Configuration 3 below).
  • 3. UPRIGHT CABINETS with Front-Vent Hoods
If you want to place the wine cabinet flush against the wall but you don't have the required clearance (as outlined in Configuration 1 above), or you want to place the wine cabinet in an enclosed space, closet, or alcove, our front-vent hood (placed on top of the wine cabinet) can be used with 7 1/2 inches of clearance above the wine cabinet for removal of the hood and the air filter. Please note:
    • Contemporary wine cabinets, Loft wine cabinets and Vault wine cabinets can use our front vent hood with OR without the decorative grill.
    • European Country wine cabinets, Mission wine cabinets and Carolina wine cabinets can use our front vent hood without the decorative grill (the decorative grill will not fit with crown moldings).

4. CREDENZA WINE CABINETS
Credenza wine cabinets don't require any clearance above the wine cabinet; however, all credenzas require 3-4 inches of space behind the wine cabinet because all the ventilation (intake and exhaust) occurs behind the cabinet.

Please note:
(1) We count the top of the racks as 1 row when counting rows in our racks.
(2) Every slot in the racks is 3 3/4" and sized to fit oversized Burgundy and most Champagne-size bottles.
(3) Bulk storage is located atop the racks (except for the first row atop the racks). Bulk storage capacity is based on Bordeaux-size bottles.
(4) Total capacity is the sum of racked plus bulk capacity, with double-deep storage in all cases except the Contemporary Credenza (which is single-deep). Usable capacity may be lower by 2-3 bottles when the first few cells under the cooling unit are left empty for proper air circulation.

Can the Le Cache 1400 Classic sit flush against a wall, or does it need clearance behind it?

A: The 1400 Classic uses Le Cache's SB/0™ Technology, which routes exhaust through a top-vent system rather than out the back. That means the cabinet can be placed flush against a wall with no rear clearance required — a significant advantage for dining rooms, living spaces or finished basements where you don't want the unit jutting out. It is a freestanding cabinet, not a built-in, so no cabinetry surround or trim kit is needed.

What is the real-world bottle capacity, and will it fit large-format Burgundy or Champagne bottles?

A: Total rated capacity is 172 bottles: 160 slots in the all-wood interlock racking (slots are 3.8 inches wide) plus bulk space for approximately 12 additional bottles stacked. The universal racking is designed to accommodate oversized bottles, including larger-diameter Burgundy and Champagne formats that standard 3.375-inch slots can't handle. If your collection is heavily weighted toward those formats, real-world racked capacity will be somewhat lower than the 160-slot figure.

Which CellarPro cooling unit should I choose, and what are the electrical requirements?

A: The 1400 Classic is available with three CellarPro 1800-series units, all running on a standard 115V AC / 60 Hz outlet. The 1800QTL-ECX is the quietest option at 2.4 amps running / 14.2 amps startup. The 1800QT-ECX draws 2.9A running / 20.1A startup, and the 1800XT-ECX draws 3.0A running / 20.1A startup. For a living area or dining room installation where noise matters, the QTL is the right call. Le Cache provides a Thermal Load Calculations guide to help match the unit to your specific room conditions — ambient temperature and insulation levels in the installation space are the key variables.

How does the 1400 Classic manage humidity, and why does that matter for long-term aging?

A: Unlike wine coolers and standard refrigerators — which control temperature only and actively dry the air — the 1400 Classic includes adjustable humidity control built into the CellarPro system. Maintaining proper humidity (generally 50–70%) prevents corks from drying out, which is the primary failure mode for bottles stored more than a few years. The cabinet also uses foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation, sealed seams and double-pane tinted glass to stabilize both temperature and humidity against ambient fluctuations. This is the core difference between a dedicated wine cabinet and a beverage cooler.

What does the warranty cover, and how long does it last?

A: The cabinet itself carries a 2-year warranty. The CellarPro cooling unit is warranted separately for 5 years. An optional extended warranty is also available. Given that the cooling unit is the highest-wear component, the 5-year coverage on that part specifically is meaningful for long-term ownership cost.

Is this cabinet appropriate for a space where noise would be noticeable, such as a dining room or home office?

A: It depends on which cooling unit you select. The CellarPro 1800QTL-ECX variant is the quietest of the three options at 2.4 amps running, and CellarPro publishes detailed sound performance data for all three units. The cabinet also runs Energy-Saver and Quick-Chill modes, and the compressor cycles rather than running continuously, so the unit is not producing noise at all times. For a dining room or open-plan space, specifying the QTL unit is strongly recommended.

Elegant Addition to the home

We converted an old kitchen area into a wine room and used this in place of the old refrigerator. It is elegant and stores a good amount of wine. Have had the unit since 2009.

Delighted Customer

I shopped extensively for a wine cooler for my condo. My wife insisted on a cabinet that was visually appealing whereas I was more focused on quality construction and quiet refrigeration. Needless to say, the Le Cache 1400 cabinet exceeded both our expectations. Our salesman, Bryan, was knowledgeable, professional and incredibly responsive to my needs. The order process and shipping tracking were flawless, and Bryan was very focused on my complete satisfaction. I would unhesitatingly recommend this product. It is beautifully constructed, holds temperature very well and is extremely quiet. Very glad I made the decision to go with Le Cache and IWA.
