When a collection spans bottles aging for a decade and whites ready for tonight, a single-zone cabinet becomes a daily compromise. The Double Castel joins two fully independent Transtherm Castel units side-by-side, each with its own thermostat and three temperature zones, so long-term cellaring and serving-temperature management share the same footprint without sacrificing either. Made in France by Eurocave, it holds 380 bottles as configured and operates in unconditioned environments from 32 to 95°F, which makes it a rare option for garages, basements and secondary homes where ambient temperatures swing too widely for most equipment.

Each side’s temperature regulation holds variance to a maximum of 2–3°F, and the slow, balanced compressors are mechanically disassociated from the cabinet body to eliminate vibration transfer. The humidity control system maintains levels between 55% and 80%, and unlike passive systems, it lets you actively add water to raise humidity when conditions require. At 37 dBA, the unit runs quietly enough for finished living spaces. The interior has been updated to aluminum throughout, and the adjustable rolling shelves accommodate all standard bottle formats without modification.

Best For

  • Holding a substantial Bordeaux or Rhône collection at long-term cellaring temperatures on one side while keeping whites and sparkling at service temperature on the other
  • Installing in an unconditioned basement, garage or second home where ambient temperatures drop below freezing in winter or climb sharply in summer
  • Managing a collection of 200–400 bottles that has outgrown a single-cabinet setup without committing to a full wine room build-out
  • Running reds and whites simultaneously at their respective optimal temperatures without pulling bottles between separate locations in the home
  • Temperature precision of ±2–3°F: The electronic regulation system limits internal variation to that range, which matters more than any single set-point when cellaring age-worthy Bordeaux or Burgundy over years or decades.
  • Vibration isolation: Slow, balanced compressors are mechanically decoupled from the cabinet body. No vibration is transmitted to the bottles — a meaningful difference from single-speed compressor units if you are storing wine long-term.
  • Thermal pump humidity management (Transtherm exclusive): Rather than venting condensation, the system recycles it to hold internal humidity between 55% and 80%. You can also manually add water to raise humidity when ambient conditions are dry. Most comparable cabinets rely on passive trays or do nothing.
  • Both heating and cooling capability: Operates in ambient environments from 32 to 95°F — not just cooling. This is relevant for unconditioned basements, garages or second homes where winter temperatures drop near freezing.
  • 4.5cm high-density expanded foam insulation: Thicker than most residential wine cabinets. Reduces thermal load on the compressors and buffers against ambient temperature swings.
  • Aluminum interior throughout (upgraded from thermoformed polystyrene). Natural ventilation within the cabinet prevents mold and odor buildup.
  • Rolling shelves with low-profile grooves accommodate Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne formats without adapters. Each shelf holds 12 bottles; fixed shelves hold up to 77 bottles each.
  • Requires two dedicated 15-Amp circuits (one per unit) at 120V / 60Hz. If you are planning a remodel or installation in a finished basement, confirm dedicated circuit capacity before ordering.
  • Multiple onboard alarms: temperature deviation, humidity, open-door and sensor fault. Lighting operates in several configurable modes. Door handle is removable and reversible for left or right swing.

Pairs Well With

  • Additional Transtherm rolling shelves — each side supports up to 14 rolling shelves (capacity decreases as shelves are added; a maximum of 9 rolling shelves per side when using all 3 fixed shelves). See the shelf configuration PDF linked in the specs tab.

Power/Rating:
120V / 60Hz; Requires 2 x 15-Amp Dedicated Circuits

Material: Melamine Laminate

Warranty:
1-Year Limited Warranty - Parts and Labor
5-Year Limited Warranty - Compressor

What These Specs Mean

  • Requires 2 x 15-Amp Dedicated Circuits: Because this is a double unit with two independent compressor systems, each side requires its own breaker — two separate dedicated circuits must be wired and available at the installation location before the cabinet can operate.
  • 5-Year Compressor Warranty: The compressor is the most costly component to replace; a dedicated multi-year warranty that extends well beyond the standard parts coverage indicates the manufacturer stands behind the long-term reliability of the core cooling system.

Is this cabinet freestanding or can it be installed built-in?

A: The Double Castel is a freestanding unit. It requires 4 inches of clearance behind the cabinet for ventilation, which rules out a true built-in flush installation. Plan for that depth offset when measuring a niche or alcove. The doors are reversible, which gives some flexibility in tight spaces, but the ventilation requirement is fixed.

What are the electrical requirements, and does it need a dedicated circuit?

A: Yes — because this is two independent Castel cabinets joined side by side, it requires two separate 15-amp dedicated circuits running at 120V / 60Hz. Each unit draws its own power. Before delivery, confirm your installation location has two dedicated 15-amp circuits available; a single shared circuit is not sufficient.

How does the 3-zone temperature system work on each side?

A: Each of the two cabinets has 3 temperature zones: one large main compartment for long-term wine storage, plus two smaller upper sections for chilling white wine and sparkling wine to serving temperature. The two sides are completely independent — you can set one side for cellaring reds at a lower temperature and the other for service-ready whites simultaneously. Electronic regulation holds temperatures to a maximum variation of 2–3°F inside the cabinet.

How many bottles does it actually hold, and will it accommodate Burgundy or large-format bottles?

A: As configured from the factory, each side holds 190 bottles (380 total): 3 rolling shelves at 12 bottles each plus 3 fixed shelves at up to 77 bottles each. The maximum capacity per side is 209 bottles (418 total) with additional rolling shelves. Transtherm’s rolling shelves feature low-profile grooves designed to accommodate all bottle sizes, including larger Burgundy and Champagne formats. Adding rolling shelves beyond 9 per side (when using 3 fixed shelves) is not supported, and total capacity decreases as rolling shelves are added.

How quiet is the Double Castel — can it realistically live in a dining room or living space?

A: Noise is rated at 37 dBA, which is comparable to a quiet library. Transtherm achieves this through slow, balanced compressors that are mechanically decoupled from the cabinet body, eliminating the vibration transmission that causes the hum and rattle common in cheaper units. At 37 dBA it is genuinely unobtrusive in a dining room or open living area.

What does the warranty cover and for how long?

A: The Double Castel carries a 1-year limited warranty covering parts and labor and a separate 5-year limited warranty on the compressor. The compressor warranty reflects Transtherm’s confidence in the thermal pump system, which is a proprietary design that recycles condensation to maintain humidity between 55% and 80% — a component that does real work and is covered for five years independently of the general warranty.
