Transtherm Dbl Castel Glass Alum Full Shelf #17051
When a collection of 200+ bottles has outgrown a single-zone cooler or a converted closet, the Double Castel is the logical next move. Two full-height Castel cabinets joined side-by-side, each running its own independent temperature zone and three-compartment climate system, give you genuine cellar-grade control over reds aging at 55°F on one side and whites chilling for the table on the other — all in a single 53½-inch footprint. Made in France by Eurocave, it holds 330 bottles as configured and up to 418 at maximum capacity.
The engineering behind the Double Castel is what separates it from most residential wine cabinets. Transtherm's thermal pump recycles condensation to hold humidity between 55% and 80% without manual intervention, and the compressors are mechanically isolated from the cabinet body so vibration simply doesn't reach your bottles. The integrated heating element means it can run in an uninsulated garage or basement year-round — anywhere from 32 to 95°F ambient — without drift. Temperature variation inside holds to 2–3°F, which matters when you're aging Bordeaux over a decade. The aluminum interior, adjustable rolling shelves with low-profile grooves, and 37 dBA noise floor round out a cabinet that runs as quietly as it looks.
Best For
- Running long-aging Bordeaux or Rhône on one side while keeping a rotation of whites and Champagne service-ready on the other
- Installing in a basement, garage or second home where ambient temperatures swing well outside the range a cooling-only unit can handle
- Consolidating a 200–400+ bottle collection that has spread across multiple smaller coolers into a single, properly climate-controlled unit
- Situations where vibration isolation matters — older vintages or long-term aging where compressor rumble is a legitimate concern
Unlike most wine cabinets that only cool, the Castel includes an integrated heating element that allows it to operate in unconditioned spaces where ambient temperatures drop as low as 32°F — garages, basements and second homes in cold climates are viable placements without a workaround.
- Truly independent dual-cabinet construction: This is two Castel units bolted side-by-side, each with its own compressor, thermostat and temperature circuit — not a single cabinet with a divided interior. Each side can be set and monitored independently, so long-term storage and service temperatures run on separate systems.
- Electronic regulation to ±1–1.5°F: The thermostat maintains a maximum internal temperature swing of 2–3°F, which matters for long-aging bottles where consistent temperature is more important than the exact setpoint.
- Thermal pump humidity management (Transtherm exclusive): Recycles condensation back into the cabinet to maintain relative humidity between 55% and 80% — the range needed to keep corks from drying. You can also add water to raise humidity if needed.
- Vibration isolation: Slow, balanced compressors are mechanically decoupled from the cabinet body, so bottles on the rolling shelves are not subject to the micro-vibrations that accelerate sediment disturbance in aging wine.
- 37 dBA operating noise: Quiet enough for placement in a dining room or living area without being intrusive.
- Low-profile rolling shelves with grooved surface: The grooves accommodate different bottle diameters — standard Bordeaux, wider Burgundy and Champagne shapes — without requiring separate shelf accessories. Each shelf holds 12 bottles and pulls out fully for access.
- Interior upgraded to aluminum: The inner liner has moved from thermoformed polystyrene to aluminum, which is more durable and easier to clean.
- 4.5 cm high-density foam insulation throughout the cabinet walls
- Multiple onboard alarms: open-door, temperature deviation and sensor fault — visible on the digital display panel shown in the control diagram
- Reversible glass door with removable steel-and-aluminum handle; requires two dedicated 15-Amp circuits (one per side)

How many bottles does the Double Castel actually hold, and does bottle shape affect that number?
A: As configured with the included shelves, the Double Castel holds 330 bottles total — 165 per side, using 10 rolling shelves at 12 bottles each plus one half shelf at the bottom of each cabinet. The maximum capacity is 418 bottles (209 per side) with an alternate shelf configuration. The rolling shelves feature low-profile grooves designed to accommodate all standard bottle shapes, so Burgundy and Champagne bottles with wider shoulders sit alongside Bordeaux bottles without issue. A shelf configuration guide is available as a downloadable PDF.
How does the 3-zone temperature system work, and can I store reds and chill whites at the same time?
A: Each of the two cabinet sides has 3 independent temperature zones: one large main compartment for long-term wine storage (maturing zone), plus two smaller upper sections for chilling white wine and sparkling wine to serving temperature. Each side has its own digital thermostat, so you can dedicate one side entirely to cellar-temperature red storage and run the other side at a cooler serving temperature — or configure both sides identically. The electronic regulation system maintains a maximum internal variation of 2–3°F.
Is the Double Castel quiet enough to place in a dining room or living space?
A: Noise is measured at 37 dBA, which is roughly equivalent to a quiet library. Vibration is further minimized through slow, balanced compressors that are physically disassociated from the cabinet body — an important detail for wine aging, since sustained vibration can disturb sediment and accelerate chemical reactions. For a dining room or open-plan living space, 37 dBA is generally unobtrusive in normal ambient conditions.
Can the Double Castel be installed in a garage, basement or unconditioned space?
A: Yes. An integrated heating element — a feature not found on most wine cabinets — allows the Double Castel to operate in ambient environments ranging from 32°F to 95°F (0–35°C). This means it can be placed in an unheated garage or unfinished basement without risk of the internal temperature falling below the safe storage range in winter. The unit is freestanding and requires 3 inches of clearance behind it and 2 inches on the sides and top — it is not designed for flush built-in installation.
What are the electrical requirements, and do I need a dedicated circuit?
A: The Double Castel runs on 120V / 60Hz and requires two separate 15-amp dedicated circuits — one for each individual cabinet side. Standard single Castel units require only one 15-amp circuit, but the double configuration doubles that requirement. Plan for both circuits to be in place before delivery, particularly in a garage, basement or finished renovation where adding circuits during installation is disruptive.
What does the warranty cover and for how long?
A: The Double Castel carries a 1-year limited warranty covering parts and labor, plus a separate 5-year limited warranty on the compressor. The compressor coverage is the more meaningful figure for a cabinet at this price point — the thermal pump system and compressor are the components most likely to require service over time, and five years of coverage on those parts reflects the durability Transtherm (manufactured by Eurocave in France) builds into this line.
