These knives make a host gift that holds up because they're genuinely built to last. Each of the six has a handle hand-cut from a different exotic wood, with olivewood, juniper, rosewood, kingwood, boxwood and snakewood each represented, so every guest at a dinner table holds something visually distinct. Hand-forged in France by Goyon-Chazeau from solid 13mm stainless steel rods and backed by a lifetime warranty, they arrive in a French oak gift box that's ready to give without additional wrapping.

The construction separates these from decorative knife sets. Drop-hammered bolsters and handles riveted directly into the single-piece steel spine give each knife a balance and structural integrity that holds through years of regular use. Because every handle piece is hand-cut from raw exotic wood, the grain and color vary slightly within the set. That variation is a natural result of the materials, and it's part of what makes the table look considered rather than uniform. Note that each knife is finished by hand, so minor differences in size and color between pieces are expected.

Best For

  • Giving to someone who hosts sit-down dinners regularly and will reach for a well-made knife set every time
  • Setting a table for six where each place gets a handle from a different exotic wood without a matched, catalog look
  • Cutting through a thick-cut steak or firm aged cheese without the serrated blade dragging or skipping
  • Presenting a ready-to-give gift straight from the French oak box with nothing else needed

Laguiole Knife Construction Diagram

  • French Laguiole knives and utensils are famous for their beauty and strength - but all Laguiole utensils are the same. In fact, not all Laguiole products are made in France!
  • The strongest utensils are fully forged, with bolsters that are drop-hammered and shaped when the metal is over 1000C. These utensils start with a single rod of stainless steel, and end with a full metal tang and single piece of matal from blade to handle. Bolsters are critcally important as the point of balance and protection for fingers as they push against the utensil.
  • Laser and die-cut utensils are offered with and without bolsters. When offered, the bolsters are welded or attached with plastic construction. These utensils are more inexpensive than fully-forged utensils and can range in price and quality.
  • Goyon Chazeau knives and utensils are fully-forged, providing the highest level of strength and durability.
  • Fully forged from a single 13mm stainless steel rod: Unlike stamped or cut-plate knives, each blade is hammered out of one continuous bar of X46CR13 steel - no separate tang, no welded joint between blade and handle. The result is a structurally unified knife that won't loosen or separate over years of use.
  • Drop-hammered bolsters: The bolsters are formed under high-pressure hammering rather than attached after the fact, which gives the blade-handle junction far greater resistance to stress than welded or glued alternatives.
  • Each of the 6 knives has a different exotic wood handle (olivewood, juniper, rosewood, kingwood, boxwood and snakewood), so the set reads as visually varied at the table rather than uniform.
  • Because handles are hand-cut from natural wood, grain, color and exact dimensions vary from knife to knife. Each piece is distinct, and that variation is inherent to the material.
  • Serrated matte-finish blades hold a working edge through repeated use without requiring frequent resharpening.
  • Arrives in a French oak presentation box with the Goyon-Chazeau brand mark inlaid on the lid — no additional wrapping needed for gifting.
  • Hand-wash only with mild soap and warm water; not dishwasher safe.
  • Backed by a lifetime manufacturer's warranty.
