When the table needs to look considered without trying too hard, this 24-piece Laguiole set from Jean Dubost does the work. Hand-made in France from polished stainless steel, it arrives in four mineral tones — warm brown, olive green, slate gray and ivory — that read earthy and collected rather than matchy. The wood storage tray it comes in is the kind of thing that makes it feel like a gift before anyone has even opened it.

Best For

  • Setting a dinner table for six where the flatware holds its own against interesting plates and glassware
  • Giving as a wedding gift when you want something French, functional and visually cohesive out of the box
  • Hosting a long dinner where the knives need to move cleanly through steak and the whole set goes straight into the dishwasher afterward
  • A housewarming where the recipient will actually use it, not just store it
  • Two steel grades, matched to function: Knives use AISI 420 stainless steel for a sharper, more durable cutting edge; forks, spoons and teaspoons use AISI 430 stainless steel, which resists corrosion and polishes easily. Most flatware sets use one grade throughout.
  • Mixed mineral handle colors across each place setting: The four handle colors — brown, gray, olive green and ivory — are distributed across the 24 pieces so no two settings at the table are identical. The effect reads as intentional rather than mismatched.
  • Characteristic Laguiole bolster detailing: Each piece carries the traditional Laguiole bee and spring-pin construction at the bolster, visible on the handle collar. This is the hallmark of authentic Laguiole design, not a decorative reproduction.
  • Piece dimensions: knives measure 9" long, forks and dinner spoons 8¼", teaspoons approximately 5⅘"
  • Wood storage tray included: The natural pine tray has four divided compartments and keeps all 24 pieces organized. It functions as gift packaging on its own — no additional wrapping needed.
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Hand-made in France by Jean Dubost, a Thiers-based maker with over 100 years of cutlery production

What These Specs Mean

  • AISI 430 Stainless-Steel: A ferritic stainless grade used for forks, spoons and teaspoons — offers solid corrosion resistance and holds up through regular dishwasher cycles.
  • AISI 420 Stainless-Steel: A martensitic stainless grade used for the knife blades — can be hardened to hold a sharper cutting edge than standard flatware steel.

What exactly comes in this 24-piece set?

A: The set includes 6 knives, 6 forks, 6 spoons and 6 teaspoons — enough to set a full table for six. All 24 pieces arrive sorted in a natural wood tray (8⅜" wide x 13" deep x 1½" tall) that doubles as a drawer organizer or display. Nothing extra to buy to use or store it right out of the box.

What handle colors are included, and do they match across place settings?

A: The Mineral colorway mixes brown, green, gray and ivory acrylic handles throughout the set — each piece gets a different color rather than matching sets of six. The effect is an intentionally varied, earthy table rather than a uniform one. If you prefer every place setting to match, this set is designed to mix; if you want six identical place settings, look at the single-color Laguiole options instead.

Are these dishwasher safe, and does the dishwasher damage the handles over time?

A: Yes, the entire set is dishwasher safe. The handles are made from acrylic, which holds up to repeated machine washing without warping or fading the way natural materials like horn or wood can. The stainless steel blades and bolsters are also fully compatible with dishwasher cycles.

What grade of stainless steel is used, and does it hold a sharp edge?

A: The knives use AISI 420 stainless steel, a high-carbon steel that takes and retains a sharper edge than the more common 18/10 grades used in most flatware. The forks, spoons and teaspoons are made from AISI 430 stainless steel, polished to 1.5 mm thickness for a substantial, balanced feel in hand. Both grades are corrosion-resistant and suited to regular table use.

Is this set made in France, and does that matter for the Laguiole name?

A: Yes — this set is hand-made in France by Jean Dubost, one of the established producers in the Laguiole tradition. The Laguiole name is not a protected designation of origin, so many pieces sold under it are made elsewhere; buying from a French manufacturer like Jean Dubost is the clearest way to ensure you’re getting authentic construction, including the distinctive bolster and bee detailing visible on the handles.

Does this set make a good wedding or hostess gift, and does it come presentation-ready?

A: It ships in the natural wood storage tray with all 24 pieces organized by type, so it arrives looking considered rather than just boxed. At 4.8 lbs fully loaded, it has real presence. The mix of mineral-toned handles and French provenance read as thoughtful rather than generic, which makes it well-suited for weddings, housewarmings or any occasion where you want to give something that will actually be used and noticed on the table.

Attractive and well-constructed

Like the quality. Knives are not as sharp as they appear and I'd prefer dinner forks and salad forks and soup and regular spoons (rather than teaspoons), but the quality and appearance are great.
