The Riedel Cabernet Magnum Decanter is the kind of piece that earns its place on the table before a bottle is even opened. Its wide, low-slung base and graceful tapered neck give young Cabernets and full-bodied reds the surface area and time they need to open up — pour it hours ahead and the wine that reaches the glass will taste more developed than its age suggests. At 64 ounces, it holds a full magnum and looks proportional doing it, sitting clear and unadorned in lead-free crystal that lets the wine's color speak for itself.

Best For

  • Decanting a young Cabernet or Bordeaux-style red a few hours before a dinner party to coax out its full character
  • Serving an older red with sediment where clarity in the pour actually matters
  • Gifting to a host who opens bottles regularly and would notice the difference a real decanter makes
  • Setting a table where the decanter needs to hold its own visually without being fussy about it
  • Magnum capacity (64 oz): Holds a full magnum bottle or two standard 750ml bottles - enough for a dinner table of six without a second pour from the bottle.
  • Wide base, tapered neck: The broad lower chamber maximizes wine-to-air contact for aeration. The narrow neck slows the pour and helps keep sediment in the decanter rather than in the glass.
  • Serves two different purposes depending on the wine: For young, tannic reds like Cabernet Sauvignon, decant several hours ahead to open up the wine. For older vintages with sediment, a brief decant just before serving is enough to preserve clarity in the glass.
  • Machine-made from lead-free crystal - consistent wall thickness throughout and fully transparent so you can see the wine’s color and depth.
  • 10¾” tall with a clean teardrop silhouette that reads well on a table without competing with the glassware around it.
  • No stopper included — this is an open decanter designed for service, not storage.

Pairs Well With

  • A decanting funnel — as shown in the product imagery, a funnel helps direct the bottle’s pour cleanly into the narrow neck while catching any remaining sediment.

Will this decanter actually hold a full magnum bottle of wine?

A: Yes. The Riedel Cabernet Magnum Decanter holds 64 ounces, which is enough to accommodate a full magnum bottle (1.5L / ~50.7 oz) with room to spare. A standard 750ml bottle (~25.4 oz) fills it less than halfway, giving the wine a generous surface area to breathe and open up.

What’s the difference between how you use it for a young Cabernet versus an older bottle?

A: For a young wine, decant it several hours before serving — the wide base exposes the wine to air and allows it to develop in a way that normally takes years in bottle. For an older wine with sediment, decant it just a few moments before serving so the deposits stay behind and the wine pours clear. Same decanter, two very different techniques depending on what’s in your cellar.

Is this decanter hand-blown or machine-made, and does it contain lead?

A: It’s machine-made from lead-free crystal. That distinction matters for a couple of reasons: machine production means consistent wall thickness and a more durable piece less prone to chipping, and lead-free crystal means no risk of lead leaching into the wine regardless of how long you leave it to decant.

How tall is this decanter and how does it sit on a table?

A: The decanter stands 10¾ inches tall and weighs 3.3 lbs. The shape — a wide, rounded base that tapers into a long graceful neck — gives it real presence on a dining or sideboard table without looking oversized. It reads as intentional rather than decorative.

Is this a good gift, and does it come in a box?

A: The Riedel Cabernet Magnum Decanter is a strong gifting choice for any wine drinker — it’s a recognizable name, a generous size and a piece that gets used rather than displayed. Riedel ships this product in branded packaging, which is appropriate for gifting as-is.

Large size

This decanter holds 64 oz, which is much bigger than I expected. I should've paid attention to the name, it says "Magnum" - duh! I really like the simple, elegant shape of this decanter.

Okay for price

Easy to use and looks great on the table, but the glass quality isn’t anything to write home about. The size is good and it aerates well, it just didn’t wow me. It’s okay for a lower end decanter, but I was expecting better.
