Riedel O Magnum Decanter #1381
Details
When a dinner calls for something more than a standard bottle, the Riedel O Magnum Decanter is built for the occasion. Its 81-ounce capacity handles a full magnum with ease, and the swept-back neck with an angled oval opening gives it a sculptural presence that reads as considered rather than fussy. The raised internal cone at the base — visible through the clear lead-free crystal — channels wine outward as it’s poured in, exposing it to air and doing the work that time and patience would otherwise require.
Decanting an older wine just before serving separates it from sediment and lets it arrive in the glass at its clearest. A younger red, left to breathe for a few hours in this decanter, opens in ways that can take years in bottle. At over 15 inches tall, it doesn’t disappear on a table — but it earns its place there.

FAQs
How much wine does the Riedel O Magnum Decanter hold, and can it actually fit a full magnum bottle?
A: The decanter holds 81 ounces (approximately 2.4 liters), which is enough to comfortably accommodate a full 1.5-liter magnum (about 50.7 oz) with room to spare, or two standard 750ml bottles poured together. That generous capacity makes it well-suited for dinner parties where you’re serving multiple guests from a single vessel.
Should I decant old wines and young wines differently with this decanter?
A: Yes — and the technique is almost opposite for each. With older wines, decant just a few moments before serving to separate any sediment and let the wine’s clarity come through without over-exposing it to air. With young wines, decant several hours ahead of serving so the wine opens up and develops complexity that would otherwise take years of bottle aging to achieve. The O Magnum’s wide base and angled neck support both approaches well.
What is the distinctive hollow post inside the base of the O Magnum, and does it serve a purpose?
A: The upward-pointing interior cone visible at the bottom of the decanter is the design signature of Riedel’s O series. It creates a striking visual effect as wine pools around it and contributes to the sculptural presence of the piece on a table. It also adds structural integrity to the base of the mouth-blown crystal form.
Is the Riedel O Magnum Decanter made from lead crystal?
A: No — it is mouth-blown from lead-free crystal, which delivers the same clarity and brilliance as traditional lead crystal without the health concerns associated with lead content. Lead-free crystal is also generally considered safer for extended contact with wine, including long decanting sessions.
How large and heavy is this decanter — is it easy to handle and pour from?
A: The decanter stands 15¼ inches tall and weighs 4.2 lbs. The angled, open neck creates a controlled pour, though at full capacity the weight is substantial — something to keep in mind when pouring for guests. The elongated silhouette and curved neck give it a commanding presence on a sideboard or dining table.

I looked a few different Riedel magnum decanters while shopping around.
This one stood out for its towering elegance and pronounced punt.
The punt at the bottom assists with aeration.

I use these Riedel decanters for my catering business, because they create a great "wow" factor at the table.
Stunning Decanter

Although admittedly expensive, this decanter looks and feels so elegant. We've tried several decanters and anything that holds two bottles of wine is bound to be heavy and a bit difficult to handle. Not this one. The weight is so evenly distributed and with the thumb/aerator in the bottom, you don't even notice the weight. It's height makes it so sleek-looking and it always gets commented on. Gave it to friends as a thank you gift and after we saw it in person, immediately purchased one for ourselves. Highly recommend.

Great Decanter

It's a great decanter. Red wines really mellow in it. Only downer is when you pour, it leaves a big drip on the spout. Use your finger to get it off or you have a stain on the tablecloth.
