Riedel Cabernet Decanter #1165
Details
When you're opening a bottle of Cabernet an hour before guests arrive, this decanter does the quiet work that makes a real difference at the table. The wide, angular base gives young wine enough surface area to breathe and open up over time, while the tapered neck controls the pour with ease. Mouth-blown from lead-free crystal, it has a clean, unfussy silhouette that looks considered without drawing attention to itself — the kind of piece that sits confidently on a dining table or sideboard without needing explanation.
For older bottles, decanting just moments before serving keeps any sediment behind and lets the wine's clarity come through in the glass. At 39 ounces, it holds a full bottle with room to spare.
Best For
- Opening a tannic red an hour before guests sit down so it arrives at the table already expressive and settled
- Serving an older bottle where sediment needs to stay out of the glass
- Gifting to a host who entertains regularly with wine and would notice the difference a proper decant makes
- A dining table or home bar where a decanter needs to look clean and considered without being showy
Features
- Mouth-blown lead-free crystal: Shaped by hand rather than machine, the walls are thinner and more even than mass-produced glass, so the wine’s color comes through clearly and the vessel feels noticeably lighter in hand.
- Wide-base, narrow-neck form: The broad lower chamber spreads wine across a larger surface area, which is what drives aeration. The tapered neck slows the pour and keeps the wine in contact with air longer on the way out.
- 39 oz capacity holds a full 750ml bottle with room to spare — no need to pour in stages or risk overflow.
- Sized at 9¼” tall and 5” wide, it fits on a standard dining table or sideboard without requiring extra clearance.
- Works for both young and aged reds: give a young Cabernet several hours of air before serving, or decant an older bottle just before the meal to leave sediment behind in the original bottle.
- No stopper included — this is a decanting vessel, not a storage carafe. Wine should be poured from it within a few hours of decanting.

FAQs
Is this decanter designed only for Cabernet, or will it work for other red wines?
A: The name refers to the wide, angular base shape suited to bold, tannic reds — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah all benefit from the broad surface area that promotes aeration. It also handles older wines well: pouring just a few moments before serving separates sediment and restores a wine’s natural clarity without over-aerating it. Young wines benefit from several hours of decanting, while older, more fragile bottles need only a brief rest before serving.
Will a full bottle of wine actually fit, with room to aerate?
A: Yes. The decanter holds 39 ounces, which is meaningfully more than a standard 750ml bottle (approximately 25.4 oz). That extra headspace is intentional — it lets the wine circulate and breathe rather than sitting flush against the walls, which is what makes the aeration effective rather than just decorative.
How long should I decant a young red wine in this before serving?
A: For young, tannic reds, Riedel recommends decanting several hours before serving. The extended air contact allows the wine to bloom and reach a stage of development that would otherwise require years of bottle aging. For older vintages with sediment, a few moments in the decanter right before serving is all you need — just enough to clarify the pour without stripping the wine’s more delicate character.
What does “mouth-blown lead-free crystal” actually mean for this piece?
A: Mouth-blown means each decanter is individually shaped by a glassblower rather than pressed by machine, which produces thinner, more uniformly tapered walls and a visual clarity that mass-produced glass can’t replicate. Lead-free crystal achieves that same optical brilliance without lead oxide, so it’s safe for food and drink contact while still giving the wine a clean, luminous presentation on the table.
How large is this decanter, and is it easy to handle and pour from?
A: It measures 5 inches wide by 5 inches deep by 9¼ inches tall and weighs 1.7 lbs when empty. The tapered neck is narrow enough to grip comfortably with one hand and directs the pour cleanly. At under 10 inches tall it fits neatly on a table or sideboard without dominating the setting.

We use this decanter in our tasting room for one of our Cabernet Sauvignons. It's beautiful and clearly a quality product, very easy to handle and does an wonderful job decanting.
Beautiful yet simple.

This was a great purchase. Pretty much the only decanter that we use in our house. It has withstood many many uses and still looks great. Highly recommended.
Great for young wines

I frequent the wineries in the Shenandoah valley, and usually end up with several young bottles that I uncork before their time. Since I started using this decanter, I really notice the difference. Highly recommended if you suffer from impatience like me!
Love this decanter

Decanting wine is so important to the overall experience and I love this decanter. It's small but does the job. It is simple in design but easy to clean!

After a recent trip to Napa, we decided to invest in a decanter. Since we had not owned and used one before we decided to limit what we spent on what was to be our first step.
Consequently we decided on this model from Riedel since a good bit of the wine we are serving to family and friends are cabernets, though certainly not exclusively cabs and it is more moderately priced than many on the market.
One of the first wines we poured was an modestly aged wine we found in Southern California. When I first opened it, it did not smell like the wine we had enjoyed a few years ago when we visited the winery. After more than an hour in the decanter it was back to life.
Without decanting, this bottle would have been poured down the drain. Very glad we bought this decanter.
