Riedel Horn Decanter Yellow & Black #15241
Details
This is the decanter you set on the table before guests arrive and let do the talking. Inspired by the Post Horn of Austria’s horse-drawn mail service — the same instrument that caught Mozart’s ear — the Horn Decanter is mouth-blown in lead-free crystal in Austria, with a warm amber-and-black stripe that winds through the glass in a looping coil true to its namesake. At nearly 15 inches tall and 88 ounces, it holds a full bottle with room to breathe and commands attention from across a dining room.
Decanting works differently depending on the wine. A few minutes in the Horn before serving is enough to clarify an older red and separate it from any sediment that’s accumulated in the bottle. Pour a young, tannic Cabernet or Barolo in an hour or two before dinner and the wine opens up in a way that normally takes years of cellaring to achieve. The shape and volume of this decanter support both approaches.
Best For
- Giving to a host or wine enthusiast who will actually use it — not tuck it away in a cabinet
- Setting out a bold red an hour before a dinner party so it’s already open and expressive when guests sit down
- Serving an older bottle where clarity matters and you want the pour to be clean from the first glass
- A table where the decanter is as much a part of the setting as the wine itself
Features
- 88 oz capacity: holds a full 750ml bottle with room to spare, so you can pour the entire bottle in one pass without worrying about overflow.
- Coiled tube body: wine travels the full length of the looping crystal channel during the pour, increasing air contact before it settles into the base. The shape contributes directly to aeration, not just appearance.
- Mouth-blown by hand: each piece is individually formed at Riedel's Austrian facility. Minor variation between pieces is inherent to the process and expected — no two are exactly alike.
- The yellow & black color runs through the crystal coil itself, applied during the blowing process rather than added after forming.
- Stands nearly 15" tall with a 10 3/4" wide footprint — substantial enough to hold its own on a dining table without additional arrangement around it.
- Lead-free crystal throughout.
- Riedel part number 2014/02 — useful when gifting so the recipient can reference or register the piece.

FAQs
What is the capacity of the Riedel Horn Decanter and will it hold a full bottle of wine?
A: The Horn Decanter holds 88 ounces, which is more than enough for a standard 750ml (25.4 oz) bottle of wine with significant room to spare. The large interior volume also means wine has ample surface contact for aeration, which is especially useful when decanting young, tannic reds like Cabernet Sauvignon for a few hours before serving.
What is the Horn Decanter made of and is it lead-free?
A: It is mouth-blown from lead-free crystal and made in Austria. The yellow and black coloring is worked directly into the crystal during the blowing process, not applied as a coating. Each piece is handmade, which means minor variations in the colored stripe are a natural result of the mouth-blown technique.
What wines benefit most from using this decanter?
A: It works well for both old and young wines, but in different ways. Old wines should be decanted just a few minutes before serving so deposits and sediment are left behind, preserving the wine’s clarity and brilliance. Young wines benefit from several hours in the decanter, where exposure to air allows flavors to open and develop in a way that normally takes years of bottle aging.
What is the story behind the Horn Decanter’s design?
A: The design is inspired by the Post Horn, the instrument used by Austria’s early horse-drawn carriage mail service to announce arrivals — and later incorporated into symphonies, most notably by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Riedel drew directly on that musical heritage to shape the coiled form and the gold stripe running through the crystal, which references the horn’s brass origins. The part number is 2014/02.
How do you clean a decanter with this kind of coiled, sculptural shape?
A: Because of its complex coiled form and mouth-blown construction, hand washing is strongly recommended. A decanter cleaning brush or weighted decanter cleaning beads with warm water are the most practical approach for reaching the curved interior. The piece should be air-dried upside down on a decanter drying stand rather than towel-dried to avoid risk of breakage. Dishwasher use is not advised for mouth-blown crystal decanters of this shape.
How large is the Riedel Horn Decanter and will it fit on a standard sideboard or bar cart?
A: The Horn Decanter measures 10¾” wide x 3” deep x 14¾” tall and weighs 7.3 lbs when empty. The tall, angled neck extends upward at a diagonal, so overhead clearance matters as much as footprint. It is designed to stand on its own and makes a strong visual impression on a sideboard or dining table, but confirm you have at least 15” of vertical clearance before placing it on a low bar cart shelf.

First, these decanters sold out. I ordered in March and just received the Decanter May 4th.
IWA explained going there would be a wait.
Personally, I thought they were creating additional Decanter's and I thought of the decanter blown especially for me. It is exquisite, fragile yet sturdy and well WORTH the wait!!! IWA kept me updated throughout the process.
I an equestrian and I love the history of the horn.
In addition, you can actuality blow into it and it does make a horn sound, although I will not be doing that too much, I do not wish to blow bubbles into the wine!
Stunning...

Amazing - Decanter or Art?

This decanter takes my breath away. It is so beautiful, and really is shaped like a post horn. A full bottle fits easily in the decanter, but honestly, I'd rather show the decanter as a piece of art, it's that stunning, especially with the vibrant colors. I don't love every Riedel decanter - the Boa is ugly - but this horn is truly magnificent.

When I first saw this Riedel Horn Decanter I knew I had to have it. When we opened the box my wife and I both went WOW! The photo does not do it justice. Of all the decanters we own, which is a lot, this is our favorite. I can't wait to roll it out this Thanksgiving.
