Riedel Amadeo Decanter #1171
The Riedel Amadeo is the decanter you set on the table before guests arrive and leave there all evening. Its sweeping U-shaped silhouette — two asymmetric necks rising from a rounded crystal base — is unlike anything else in the Riedel lineup, and because each piece is mouth-blown and hand-finished in Germany, no two are exactly alike. Beyond the form, it does the work a good decanter should: the wide base aerates young reds as they breathe, while the gentle pour from the angled spout keeps an older wine’s clarity intact.
Best For
- Pouring a bottle of young Cabernet or Syrah an hour before dinner so it’s fully open when guests sit down
- Gifting to a host or wine-drinking friend who will display it even when it’s not in use
- Serving an aged red where sediment clarity and a controlled, dignified pour both matter
- Sculptural U-form design: The open harp shape is functional as well as distinctive — wine enters one side while air circulates through the other, promoting aeration without any extra pour technique required.
- 53 oz capacity: Comfortably holds a full 750ml bottle with room to spare, so nothing gets left behind in the bottle.
- Each piece is one-of-a-kind: Because the decanter is mouth-blown and hand-finished, no two are exactly alike — minor variations in the glass walls are a mark of the process, not a defect.
- Lead-free crystal: Delivers the same clarity and light-catching brilliance as traditional leaded crystal with no concerns about lead leaching into wine over time.
- Stands 14 inches tall — a noticeable presence on a sideboard or dining table even when empty.
- Made in Germany by Riedel (P/N 1756/13).
- Hand-wash recommended to preserve the thin-walled crystal and hand-finished edges.

What makes the Riedel Amadeo Decanter different from a standard decanter?
A: The Amadeo has a distinctive U-shaped, harp-like form that makes it immediately recognizable on a table — it looks like a sculpture even when empty. More importantly, it's mouth-blown by hand in Germany, which means no two pieces are exactly alike. The wide, rounded base maximizes wine-to-air contact for aeration, while the twin-spout design gives you control over the pour. At 14 inches tall and 53 ounces capacity, it commands attention without taking over the table.
Does the Amadeo work for both old and young wines?
A: Yes, and the design addresses both use cases. For young, tannic wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, the broad base encourages oxygen exposure that softens structure and opens up aromatics. For older vintages, the gentle pour from the curved spout helps separate wine from sediment while preserving clarity and brilliance. It's one of the few decanters designed to perform across both ends of the bottle age spectrum.
Is the Amadeo made from lead-free crystal?
A: Yes. The Amadeo is mouth-blown from lead-free crystal at Riedel's facility in Germany. Lead-free crystal delivers the clarity, brilliance and thin-wall refinement of traditional lead crystal without the health concerns, so you get the full visual impact of the wine's color with no compromise on safety.
How much wine does the Riedel Amadeo hold, and will a full bottle fit?
A: The Amadeo holds 53 ounces, which is well above a standard 750ml bottle (approximately 25 oz). You can comfortably decant a full bottle and still have room for the wine to breathe and move. The extra volume in the base is intentional — it creates the surface area needed for proper aeration rather than just serving as storage.
Is the Riedel Amadeo a good gift, and does it come in a gift box?
A: The Amadeo is one of Riedel's most recognizable collector pieces — the sculptural form photographs well and feels considered rather than generic, which makes it a strong choice for a host gift or a milestone occasion. Each decanter is individually hand-blown and unique, so the recipient is getting a one-of-a-kind object. Packaging details are not specified in the product data, so it's worth confirming before purchase if presentation boxing is important for gifting.
What are the dimensions and weight of the Amadeo?
A: The Amadeo measures 8 inches wide, 3 inches deep and 14 inches tall, and weighs 5.5 pounds. The weight reflects the thick, rounded base that gives the decanter its stability — it sits securely on a table despite the open, asymmetric silhouette at the top. The footprint is modest enough to fit a standard sideboard or dining table without crowding other pieces.

Beautiful
Beautiful piece. Looks great on the bar counter empty or full, and the curve makes it easy to use.

Good and bad
The Amadeo decanter has an incredible "wow" factor - as a gift, it's sure to get "oohs" and "ahs", and it's beatiful crystal, almost like a piece of art. But the functionality of the decanter is not as good as more traditional decanters. You need to turn the decanter almost upside downto get the wine to pour out, and it's a very delicate piece of glass. I think this is a great product for special occasions, but I wouldn't recommend it for everyday use.
