This board is food safe. There are no chemicals used in making this board. Each board is made from thermal ash, roasted in the kiln until they are rich and chocolatey brown. They will have a scent like woodsmoke or tobacco due to the charring process throughout the entire board which makes it a little more porous. After roasting, each board is treated with butcher block oil which extends the life of the board and helps to avoid cracking. (Any residue is the oil and the dark wood combined). Our butcher block oil has no chemicals and is all natural.

Care Instructions
After use, the cutting board should be cleaned with hot, mild soapy water. It should not be soaked in water, because this may cause the board to crack and warp. Periodically, the board should be oiled with a food-safe mineral oil to keep it from cracking. Make sure the board is completely clean and dry before oiling, and use a clean soft cloth or paper towel to apply. Let it soak in, then wipe off the excess.

Is laser-etched personalization included in the price, and how does it work?

A: Yes — personalization is included in the $140 price. You choose from three laser-etched fonts: Copperplate (bold block letters), Edwardian (flowing script) or Willow (a looser handwritten script). The etching is burned directly into the wood, not painted or applied, so it won’t wear off with regular use. Font examples are shown in the product images.

How do I clean and maintain this walnut board?

A: Hand wash only — do not put this board in the dishwasher or soak it in water, as prolonged moisture will cause warping and cracking. Clean with hot, mild soapy water after each use and dry promptly. Periodically treat the surface with a food-safe mineral oil: make sure the board is completely clean and dry first, apply with a soft cloth or paper towel, let it soak in, then wipe off the excess. The board ships pre-treated with all-natural butcher block oil.

A: Not exactly — and that’s expected with live-edge walnut. Color, grain pattern and shade will vary from board to board because each piece comes from a unique section of the tree. The photos were taken under bright studio lighting, so your board may appear slightly darker in natural or indoor light. The live edge silhouette will also differ. The etching placement and font appearance, however, will match what is shown.

How long does it take to receive this board after ordering?

A: Because each board is personalized to order, allow 2–3 weeks for processing before shipment. Plan accordingly if purchasing as a gift for a specific event — a wedding, housewarming or holiday.

Is this board actually food-safe, and what finish is on it?

A: The board is completely food-safe. No chemicals, stains or synthetic finishes are used in its construction. The only treatment applied is an all-natural butcher block oil, which has no chemicals and is used specifically to condition the wood and prevent cracking. The walnut itself is untreated beyond that oil, so the surface that contacts food is entirely natural.
