Integrating Smart Technology Into Your Custom Wine Cellar

Smart technology can improve convenience and control in wine cellars, particularly for temperature regulation, lighting, and inventory management. The tools below support remote access, environmental monitoring, and bottle organization.

Networkable Thermostats

Networkable thermostats from brands like Nest, Ecobee, and Honeywell connect to smart home systems and allow you to monitor and adjust temperature and humidity via a mobile app. Many provide performance history, alerts, and charted data.

These thermostats typically include built-in temperature sensors and must be installed inside the cellar. They connect to the cooling unit using low-voltage wiring. Some models use wireless remote sensors, allowing the main thermostat to be placed outside the cellar.

Not all thermostats are compatible with wine cellar cooling systems. Integration often requires specific electronics installed during manufacturing. Always check with the cooling unit manufacturer to confirm compatibility before selecting a thermostat.

Remote Displays

Remote displays provide access to basic cooling unit functions—most commonly, temperature control—from a more accessible location. These are especially useful when the cooling unit is installed in a hard-to-reach area, such as an attic or crawlspace.

Remote displays typically do not contain temperature sensors and therefore they can be installed inside or outside the cellar using low-voltage wiring. More advanced settings, such as variable fan speed, may still require direct access to the cooling unit.

Smart Cellar LED Lighting

Wi-Fi or Bluetooth-enabled LED lighting can be controlled through a smartphone or voice assistant. Features often include dimming, color adjustment, and scheduling. Motion sensors reduce energy usage by turning lights off when not needed. Some systems also allow for simulated occupancy when you're away.

Inventory Management Systems

Apps such as CellarTracker, CellarEye, and VinoCell help manage your collection by logging bottle location, tasting notes, and storage conditions. They support sorting by region, varietal, vintage, and other attributes.

Tip: Spreadsheets are another option for collectors who prefer custom organization or who want to track inventory value.
