This board is food safe. There are no chemicals used in making this board. Each board is made from thermal ash, roasted in the kiln until they are rich and chocolatey brown. They will have a scent like woodsmoke or tobacco due to the charring process throughout the entire board which makes it a little more porous. After roasting, each board is treated with butcher block oil which extends the life of the board and helps to avoid cracking. (Any residue is the oil and the dark wood combined). Our butcher block oil has no chemicals and is all natural.

Care Instructions
After use, the cutting board should be cleaned with hot, mild soapy water. It should not be soaked in water, because this may cause the board to crack and warp. Periodically, the board should be oiled with a food-safe mineral oil to keep it from cracking. Make sure the board is completely clean and dry before oiling, and use a clean soft cloth or paper towel to apply. Let it soak in, then wipe off the excess.

Very disappointing!
I expected a beautiful piece of wood for this serving board. What I received looks like a cheap piece of laminated product. Very disappointing. Previous reviews left me expecting something I would enjoy giving as a gift. I think it will be firewood instead since personalized returns are not permitted.

Thank you for your feedback. The board is made from solid ash wood. Nothing is laminated. The only design element is the personalized name. Our thought was that the natural color, grain and heft of the wood board wouldn't need to be further adorned.

Beautiful Board!
