The Riedel O Decanter earns its place on a well-set table twice over — once for how it looks and once for what it does to the wine inside. Its teardrop body, arched interior base and dramatically angled spout give it a sculptural presence that reads considered rather than fussy. Made from lead-free crystal, it holds 35 ounces and handles both ends of the wine spectrum: a brief pass through the decanter strips sediment from an older vintage without robbing it of presence, while a few hours of exposure coaxes a young red into showing what it’s actually capable of.

Best For

  • Opening a young Cabernet or Syrah a few hours before dinner so it arrives at the table at its best
  • Decanting an aged red moments before serving to keep the pour clean and clear
  • Giving to a host who will actually use it — and display it on a sideboard between pours
  • Setting a dinner table where the glassware is expected to hold its own alongside the food
  • Raised interior dome at the base: The molded arch inside the bottom is a signature element of the O series — visible through the crystal and a clear visual differentiator from standard decanter shapes on the table.
  • Angled, swept-back pour lip: The asymmetric opening directs wine in a broad arc rather than a narrow stream, adding passive aeration as it leaves the vessel.
  • Wide teardrop belly: The broad midsection creates a large wine surface area during the decant, which accelerates aeration for young, tight reds without requiring hours of waiting.
  • 35 oz capacity holds a standard 750ml bottle.
  • Lead-free crystal: Clearer and lighter than standard glass, letting wine color read with full brilliance in the light.
  • Machine-made for consistent wall thickness throughout — more uniform than mouth-blown alternatives and less susceptible to uneven stress points.
  • 9 inches tall, 2.3 lbs — substantial on the table without being difficult to maneuver during a pour.

How does the Riedel O Decanter work for both old and young wines?

A: The approach differs by wine age. For old wines, decanting just a few moments before serving separates the wine from any deposits or sediment, preserving its clarity and brilliance in the glass. For young wines, decanting several hours ahead gives the wine contact with oxygen, allowing it to open up and reach a stage of development that would otherwise take years of bottle aging. The O Decanter handles both jobs in the same vessel.

What is the raised arch inside the base of the O Decanter?

A: The internal dome or arch molded into the base is a structural and functional design feature. It increases the surface area of wine in contact with air as the wine rests in the decanter, supporting aeration from below while the wide body does the same from the sides. It also contributes to the decanter's distinctive silhouette when viewed from any angle on a table.

What are the dimensions and how much wine does the O Decanter hold?

A: The O Decanter stands 9 inches tall, weighs 2.3 lbs and holds 35 ounces — enough for a standard 750ml bottle with a little room to spare. The wide, rounded body and angled pour lip are designed to make the pour smooth and controlled even when the decanter is tipped nearly horizontal.

Is the Riedel O Decanter machine-made or handblown, and does that matter?

A: It is machine-made from lead-free crystal. For a decanter, machine production means consistent wall thickness and dimensional precision across every piece, which matters for predictable pour behavior and durability. Lead-free crystal delivers the optical clarity of traditional crystal without the concerns associated with lead content — an important distinction for a vessel that holds wine for extended periods.

How does the angled lip affect the way you pour from this decanter?

A: The wide, swept-back lip is designed so that tipping the decanter nearly parallel to the table produces a broad, even stream rather than a narrow trickle. Image 3 shows this in practice — the decanter is held almost flat and the wine flows in a wide ribbon. This wide pour also provides one final burst of aeration right at the moment of serving.

Very unique

The shape isn’t like any other decanter I’ve seen, which drew me to add it to my collection. The thumb holding slot is a lot of fun to use, and it shows off the color of wine. The glass is thick and sturdy. I’d highly recommend it to wine lovers.

Small, but very cool.

We have 4 of these at home and enjoy using them for wine tasting parties. They allow for easy pours and its not too large too handle. Very fun.
