Details

When a collection has grown beyond what a cooler or closet conversion can reliably protect, the Euro 5200 in Chocolate Cherry is the kind of cabinet that answers the brief completely. It holds 622 bottles — 544 in racked double-deep slots and another 78 in bulk — while maintaining the temperature and humidity conditions that long-term aging actually requires. Designed by Pinnacle Award-winning designer Martin de Blois, the European Country Series draws from the architecture of fine European furnishings: crown and base moldings, paneled sides, hardwood French doors with hand-carved accents, and hand-turned pewter pulls with security locks. The Chocolate Cherry finish gives the piece a depth and warmth that holds its own in a serious room.

The refrigeration is handled by a CellarPro cooling unit — made in the USA — with an electronic thermostat, digital display and adjustable humidity control. That last point matters: most wine coolers and refrigerators manage temperature only, leaving humidity uncontrolled and putting corks at risk over time. The Euro 5200 addresses both. Foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation and double-pane tinted glass handle the thermal and UV side. Le Cache’s SB/0™ technology allows the cabinet to sit flush against a wall without a clearance gap, which makes placement in a dining room, library or finished basement straightforward. The top-vent exhaust and high-performance air filtration system keep the interior clean and the ambient noise low. All-wood interlock racks accommodate oversized bottles without modification.

Best For

  • Storing a Bordeaux-heavy collection of 400+ bottles that has outgrown a single-zone cooler and needs reliable humidity control for decade-plus aging
  • Placing a large-format storage piece in a dining room or living space where the cabinet needs to read as furniture, not appliance
  • Outfitting a second home or remodeled basement where a freestanding, self-contained unit is more practical than a built-in cellar
  • Collectors acquiring futures or mixed cases who need both dedicated racked slots and flexible bulk space in one cabinet

Features

  • SB/0™ Technology (top-vent exhaust): The cooling unit exhausts heat through the top of the cabinet rather than the rear, so it can sit flush against a wall with no rear clearance required. This directly affects where you can place a 79"-wide, 550 lb cabinet in a finished room.
  • Foil-backed polyisocyanurate insulation: A closed-cell rigid foam with a higher R-value per inch than standard fiberglass, combined with a foil vapor barrier. This helps maintain stable internal humidity as well as temperature - relevant if the cabinet is in a climate-controlled room that still sees seasonal swings.
  • Adjustable humidity control: Actively manages interior humidity, not just temperature. This is the functional difference between this cabinet and a wine cooler or refrigerator, which cool air but don't regulate moisture and will dry out corks over time.
  • CellarPro cooling unit options: Choose between the 1800QT-HE and 1800XT-HE based on the room's thermal load. The 1800QT-HE is the quietest option. Review the Cooling Unit Selection Guide before ordering.
  • Double-deep all-wood interlock racking with 3.8" slots: 544 racked bottle slots sized to fit oversized Burgundy and Champagne formats, plus approximately 78 bottles of bulk space. Total rated capacity is 622 bottles.
  • Electronic thermostat with digital display, Energy-Saver mode and Quick-Chill mode, plus audible and visual alarms if temperature drifts out of range
  • Double-pane tinted glass provides UV filtering without blocking the view of the collection; security locks on both doors
  • Warranty coverage: 5 years on the CellarPro cooling system, 2 years on the cabinet; an optional extended warranty is also available.

Pairs Well With

  • The optional bottle probe accessory - it measures actual bottle temperature rather than cabinet air temperature, which is more accurate for tracking aging conditions over time

Placement

PLACEMENT & VENTILATION

Before choosing a location for your Le Cache wine cabinet, make sure the installation meets the following requirements.

BASIC PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Power: Standard grounded outlet on a dedicated circuit
  • Room Temperature: 50–95°F
  • Floor: Hard, level surface capable of supporting the fully loaded cabinet
  • Door Clearance: Allow approximately 1 inch of additional width in front of the cabinet for the doors to open 90°
  • Ventilation: Requirements vary depending on the cabinet and cooling configuration

VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS

Proper ventilation is essential. The cooling unit exhausts warm air, which must be able to dissipate without being drawn back into the unit. Poor ventilation can prevent the cabinet from reaching the desired temperature and may cause the cooling unit to overheat or run continuously.

SUMMARY

Configuration Minimum Clearance Behind Minimum Clearance Above Open Sides Required? Suitable for Alcove?
Upright Cabinet / Top-Vented — 12 inches or 18 inches Yes No
Upright Cabinet / Rear-Vented 3–4 inches 3 inches or 7 1/2 inches Yes No
Upright Cabinet / Top-Vented + Front-Vent Hood — 7 1/2 inches No Yes
Credenza 3–4 inches None required Yes No

1. UPRIGHT CABINET / TOP-VENTED

Our upright wine cabinets with top-vented cooling are designed so the cabinet can be placed directly against the rear wall.

Warm air exhausts through the top of the cabinet, while return air enters from above. Sufficient clearance above and around the cabinet is therefore required.

Minimum clearance above the cabinet:

  • 18 inches: Contemporary, Carolina, Loft, Vault and Semi-Custom wine cabinets
  • 12 inches: European Country, Mission and Gallery wine cabinets

Important: The sides of the cabinet must remain open so that warm air can dissipate. Top-vented upright cabinets should not be placed in a corner, enclosed space, alcove or closet unless a Front-Vent Hood is used.

2. UPRIGHT CABINET / REAR-VENTED

Upright wine cabinets can also be configured with rear-vented cooling, with return air entering from behind the cabinet. This configuration is useful when sufficient clearance above the cabinet is not available.

Requirements:

  • The cabinet must be positioned 3–4 inches away from the rear wall.
  • If the rear of the cabinet is not accessible, allow at least 7 1/2 inches above the cabinet so the cooling-unit air filter can be removed and replaced.
  • If the rear of the cabinet is accessible, allow at least 3 inches above the cabinet for airflow. We also recommend an air deflector to direct warm exhaust air to the left of the cabinet.

Important: The sides of the cabinet must remain open. Rear-vented upright cabinets should not be placed in a corner, enclosed space, alcove or closet unless a Front-Vent Hood is used.

3. UPRIGHT CABINET / TOP-VENTED + FRONT-VENT HOOD

A Front-Vent Hood can be added to a top-vented upright cabinet when:

  • The cabinet will be placed flush against the rear wall but does not have the required clearance above for a standard top-vented installation
  • The cabinet will be installed in an alcove, closet or other enclosed space

Allow at least 7 1/2 inches above the cabinet for removal of the hood and air filter.

Compatibility:

  • Contemporary, Loft and Vault: The Front-Vent Hood may be used with or without the decorative grille.
  • European Country, Mission, Carolina and Gallery: The Front-Vent Hood may be used without the decorative grille. The grille will not fit with the crown moldings.

4. CREDENZA

Credenzas do not require clearance above the cabinet; however, because both intake and exhaust ventilation occur behind the cabinet, credenzas require 3–4 inches of clearance behind the cabinet, and the sides must remain open for proper ventilation.

POWER REQUIREMENTS

The cooling unit plugs into a standard grounded wall outlet. The power cord extends approximately 6 1/2 feet from the rear of the cabinet.

The outlet must be on a dedicated circuit. The cooling unit components draw 3 amps, and the electrical outlet on the side of the cooling unit is also rated for 3 amps.

Do not share the circuit with another motor- or compressor-driven appliance such as a refrigerator, wine cooler, air conditioner or garage door opener.

We recommend using a surge protector rated for at least 15 amps to protect the cooling unit from power surges.

If an extension cord is necessary, use a grounded cord with 14-gauge wire or heavier, and keep it as short as possible.

FLOOR & WEIGHT REQUIREMENTS

A fully loaded wine cabinet is extremely heavy. Make sure the floor can support the combined weight of the cabinet and wine.

The cabinet should also be placed on a hard, level surface. On thick carpeting, the cabinet may settle unevenly over time, which can affect door alignment.

If installing on thick carpet, place a carpet board beneath the cabinet. You may purchase one from Le Cache or have a local hardware store cut a 3/4-inch plywood board to the width x depth of the cabinet.

DOOR SWING CLEARANCE

When opened to 90 degrees, the doors extend approximately 1 inch beyond the width of the cabinet.

For cabinets without moldings, allow for this additional space when planning the installation. The extra clearance is required in front of the cabinet for the doors to open fully.

Please note:
(1) We count the top of the racks as 1 row when counting rows in our racks.
(2) Every slot in the racks is 3 3/4" and sized to fit oversized Burgundy and most Champagne-size bottles.
(3) Bulk storage is located atop the racks (except for the first row atop the racks). Bulk storage capacity is based on Bordeaux-size bottles.
(4) Total capacity is the sum of racked plus bulk capacity, with double-deep storage in all cases except the Contemporary Credenza (which is single-deep). Usable capacity may be lower by 2-3 bottles when the first few cells under the cooling unit are left empty for proper air circulation.

Euro 5200 - Elegant and Functional

Mark| 3/17/2017 5:24 pm

We bought this unit in 2013 to display a portion of our wine collection in the living room. We have about 500 bottles in it and have been extremely happy with the purchase. It is a beautiful piece of furniture and a conversation piece when company is around. Our CellarPro cooler just started having problems after 3.5 years and the technical support team was very prompt in responding and shipping out a replacement unit. We have some minor concerns about the finish cracking in some areas but we live in Arizona which is a dry climate. Overall very happy and would buy another unit.

LeCache...buy the extended warranty and you'll be happy

So I purchased this unit in 2013 and as previous reviewers have stated, it is beautiful. With that said, I encourage you to buy the upgrade to the warranty. Two years in and the cooling unit quit working. We followed all instructions with regard to storage of the wine, filter changes, space requirements, and even put a fan and air purifier next to the unit. To their credit, someone did come and replace the cooling unit and I only incurred the $49 charge, but it took a bit of work on my part. Last year I noticed one of the wooden racks had completely cracked, and we are not storing an inordinate amount of bottles in the "bulk" storage area. That too was replaced with the $49 charge (plus tip of course) and now I can see the wood on both sides "bowing" in the same area and wonder if it will crack again. If it does, I hope it is still within the warranty period. A shame that these defects become big problems in such a beautiful and expensive cabinet.

Bought it and love it! Holds 52 cases of wine and told my wife(as this is my 25th anniversary present to her) we will have to travel the world to purchase wines to fill our gorgeous wine cellar!
Thank you!

Stunning and works as promised

I waited six months to write this review. I wanted to see how it would perform during the summer months and if any problems would surface as we filled it.

This is undoubtedly the most talked about piece of furniture I have ever purchased. It combines a serious presence in the room, beautiful craftsmanship, and superb functionality. I love that normal 750ML bottles can go two per rack space and that the spaces are large enough for oversize bottles. The depth will not allow two tall bottles but we have found most producers do not use tall bottles with the exception of some whites so this has not been an issue.

The noise level is fine for our open floor plan. I originally considered buying the noise hood but decided to wait until the unit was in place to see if it was required. The 1800 QT does operate at a very reasonable sound level.

Bottom line - I love this unit and would purchase it again.
