Luxury apartment tenants want climate-controlled wine storage that saves unit space. IWA recently collaborated with developers, architects and property managers to solve this challenge for a high-rise lounge in Phoenix, Arizona with individually keyed lockers.
The goal was to offer the same protection as a private cellar while maintaining the high-end aesthetic in a communal environment. If you are planning a locker project, use “food-safe” or low-VOC stains on the wood, ensure your cooling system is correctly sized for the entire space and plan for more storage capacity than initially estimated to allow room for growth.

Security with Individualized Storage
In a communal setting, security is almost as important as climate control. Each wine locker in this case study features individually keyed entries, allowing residents to enjoy the social atmosphere of a shared lounge while knowing their vintages are safe. The design incorporates flexible racking within each locker to accommodate various bottle shapes, from standard Bordeaux to wider Burgundy and Champagne bottles.
Premium redwood was selected as the primary material for the lockers, which is widely regarded by experts as the premier choice for wine environments; it is naturally resistant to warping, rot and mold. To match the upscale decor of the Phoenix high-rise, the lockers were finished with a rich dark walnut stain and a three-coat furniture-grade lacquer for a durable, polished look.
Tips for Planning Your Wine Locker Project
OVERESTIMATE CAPACITY
Plan for more lockers than anticipated. High-quality storage often encourages residents to expand their collections.
COOLING SYSTEM
Ensure your cooling system is sized correctly for the total volume of the room, accounting for the restricted airflow within individual lockers.
PROFESSIONAL FINISH
Always use "food-safe" or low-VOC stains and lacquers to prevent chemical odors permeating the corks.
