Your wine collection depends on a reliable storage environment. Many cooling units fail due to neglected maintenance; maintain your system by cleaning dust from the condenser coils with a brush and ensuring the intake grill is unobstructed.

The acidic air of wine cellars can create holes in the evaporator coils, causing a refrigerant leak that will need to be repaired and recharged by the manufacturer.

Place a box of open baking soda nearby to help mitigate acidic buildup. Check that there is sufficient ventilation around your cooling unit, the thermostat sensor is operational and in the best location, ducting is large enough without too many bends and your system is on a dedicated circuit. These simple steps can prevent costly repairs.

Neglected Maintenance

When lint and dust accumulate on the air intake grill and condenser coils, the unit cannot dissipate heat effectively, so the system overworks itself to compensate. This leads to increased energy bills and eventually causes the compressor to burn out.

To solve this problem, use a condenser brush to clean the grill and coils (the coils look like aluminum fins). In some cases, the grill will need to be removed in order to access the coils, which are usually located at the back of the cooling system.

Refrigerant Leaks

Wine aging is a natural chemical process that releases trace amounts of acidity into the air, and the effect is heightened with "younger" wines. In the enclosed environment of a wine cellar, this acidic air can gradually corrode the protective coating on your cooling unit's evaporator coils, eventually creating pinholes. When this happens, the gas inside the cooling unit begins to dissipate, and soon the cooling unit loses its ability to create cold air.

To prevent this, try opening a box of baking soda and placing it inside your wine cabinet or cellar near the cooling unit. If it is already too late, the unit will need to be returned to the manufacturer or an authorized repair center in order to seal the holes in the coils and recharge the gas.

VENTILATION

Check if there is enough unobstructed space around the exhaust and intake, based on owner manual specifications.

THERMOSTAT

False readings will cause the system to cycle incorrectly. Ensure that your bottle probe or sensor is in an optimal location.

DUCTING

To maintain airflow in ducted units, ensure the ducting size is correct, without too many bends.

DEDICATED POWER

Always use a dedicated circuit to prevent power surges from damaging sensitive electronic controllers.
