Good afternoon. The install went great and the unit is quiet and I have happy clients, thanks to CellarPro and the great products you make! Can I get some color brochures? I have a lot of clients that are looking at getting wine closet’s or cellar’s in their home, and any good product info will be good from your company.
CellarPro's 4000S cooling units (1/2 Ton Nominal) are suitable for wine cellars up to 1,000 cubic feet in both commercial and residential wine cellars. The 1,000 cubic feet cellar size assumes that the cellar is constructed with insulation of R19 or better in all walls and ceiling (ie no glass or uninsulated concrete), the cooling unit is not ducted, a setpoint of 55°F inside the cellar and ambient temperatures up to 85°F outside the cellar.
Performance testing shows that this unit maintains optimal cellar temperature and humidity conditions in extreme conditions up to 110°F more effectively than similar units from competing brands. 4000S units also are significantly quieter than comparable units from other brands.
CellarPro 4000S Cooling Unit (P/N 1763). CellarPro engineered the 4000S cooling system to provide maximum cooling power and adjustable humidity control for cellars up to 1,000 cubic feet. Split refrigeration systems separate the evaporator from the condensing unit, allowing the noise and heat from the condensing unit to be located away from interior living areas. Configurable for internal or external installations, the 4000S includes a variable-speed fan on the evaporator with a low setting for quieter operation and a high setting for maximum power.
- CellarPro 4000S units are designed to be installed with the evaporator inside the cellar, and the condensing unit in a remote location.
- Our Split refrigeration systems offer a choice of wiring:
- The Condensing unit can be electronically controlled by and wired to the Evaporator (single power source on the Evaporator side). This configuration allows the Condensing unit to be used in temperatures down to 20°F with the addition of our compressor heater, or down to -20°F with the addition of our fan cycling switch AND compressor heater. This configuration requires a 15-amp dedicated circuit breaker for 3000S and 4000S systems, and a 25-amp dedicated circuit breaker for 6000S and 8000S systems.
- The Condensing unit can be controlled by a Solenoid valve (dual power source, one each to the Evaporator and Condensing units.) This configuration allows the Condensing unit to be used in temperatures down to 20°F with the addition of our compressor heater, or 0°F with the addition of our fan cycling switch AND compressor heater. This configuration requires the evaporator to be wired to a 15-amp circuit breaker, and the condensing unit to be wired to a dedicated 15-amp circuit breaker for 3000S and 4000S systems, a dedicated 20-amp circuit breaker for 6000S systems, and a dedicated 25-amp circuit breaker for 8000S systems
- 4000S evaporators can be located remotely from the cellar with the addition of one of our front duct packages. Offered with or without insulated flex ducting, in a choice of configurations for low or high humidity conditions, our front duct packages allow these cooling units to be ducted up to 50 equivalent feet away from the cellar and requires 8-inch (or greater) ducting from start to finish.
- When calculating equivalent feet, each 90-degree turn counts for 8 feet.
- When the control panel is difficult to access, we offer a remote control display kit which is wired to the cooling unit and allows the digital display to be mounted inside or outside the cellar.
- The condensing unit requires 12 inches of unobstructed space in front of the coils, and requires approx. 600-700 CFM of ventilation when installed in a confined space.
- For outdoor installations, we offer an outdoor hood to protect the condensing unit from weather. All outdoor hoods include a compressor heater.
- The evaporator should never be exposed to temperatures below 32°F.
- Access to the left and right side of the evaporator unit is required for installation.
- All split systems must be installed and charged on site by a qualified HVAC professional. Line-set equivalent feet must be calculated in accordance with ASHRAE guidelines; refer to our Line Sizing Chart for more information.
- A CellarPro cooling unit must always be used in the upright position, and should never be operated on its side or upside down.
- We ship these units strapped to a pallet via common carrier with curbside delivery. Inside delivery is available for an additional charge.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a split system and "through the wall" or "self-contained" systems?
A: Split systems are "split" into two parts: the cold side (evaporator) which usually is installed inside the cellar, and the hot side (condensing unit) which is installed away from the cellar. The benefit of having this split is that the heat and noise from the condensing unit can be located far away from living spaces where it won't interfere with day-to-day life.
Are split systems more difficult to install than self-contained systems?
A: Yes. Split systems require installation by a licensed HVAC technician, whereas a self-contained unit can be mounted through-the-wall and is shipped fully charged and operational out of the box.
What's the difference between valve control and electronic control? Which is better?
A: The biggest difference between valve and electronic control is that, with electronic control, the condensing unit receives power directly from the evaporator, whereas with vavle control, the condensing unit is independently powered, and turns on/off based on the solenoid valve. Valve control is more common in the industry, and benefits from not having to run a power line from the evaporator to the condensing unit, but cannot operate in temperatures below 0°F. Electronic control offers more precision, and allows the condensing unit to be placed in temperatures down to -20°F (with the addition of a compressor heater and fan cycling switch.)
Can the evaporator be located in a remote location and ducted to/from the wine cellar?
A: These evaporators can be ducted up to 50 equivalent feet away from the wine cellar when used with our cold-side (front) duct hoods and kits. Remember that cold-side ducting must be insulated and additional load should be added to properly size the required cooling unit.
Can I use the low fan speed setting on the cooling unit when the unit is ducted?
A: Duct hoods and kits create additional static pressure and therefore require the use of the high fan speed to overcome the additional static pressure.
Can I install the entire unit inside the cellar?
A: No, the condensing unit must be located outside the cellar.
If I don't have sufficient space around the condensing unit, is that Ok?
A: The condensing unit generates hot air that must have sufficient space to dissipate, otherwise the unit will recycle its own hot air. The condensing unit cannot be ducted; it requires 12 inches of unobstructed space in front of the coils, and requires approx. 600-700 CFM of ventilation when installed in a confined space.
Does the evaporator include flare connections, or will I need to braze the connections to the line-set?
A: Flare connections are much more prone to leaks, and have been phased out over the years, replaced by fully-brazed connections. This is driven by the EPA and the focus on minimizing refrigerant leaks into the atmosphere.
We want to put a wood grill in front of the evaporator, what is the percentage of air flow that grill will need to have?
A: Our units require 1/2" minimum spacing, as well as a baffle behind the grill to separated the cold air discharge from the coil intake. We have seen problems with custom grills where there is a gap between the unit and the grill and it causes air circulation behind the grill resulting in coil icing. It is also important to note that the evaporator must be mounted to the interior cellar wall, not buried inside the wall. If it is buried inside the wall, the housing will require insulation, otherwise condensation and heat loss issues will occur.
Does the unit really need a dedicated circuit?
A: First, the background. Unlike our competitors, we build our cooling units with precision expansion valves, not cap tubes, which means that our cooling units aren't limited to a 30°F differential between the desired cellar temperature and the ambient temperature. Cooling systems with expansion valves are much more precise than cap tubes, and much more sensitive to low voltage conditions, which is why our units require dedicated circuits. When we say "dedicated circuit", we mean that the circuit shouldn't have any items that require heavy draws of electricity - eg other appliances, vacuum cleaners, big-screen TVs, blow-dryers - on the same circuit as the cooling unit. Lighting, computers or other low-draw items shouldn't be a problem on the same circuit.

I have not installed the unit yet, but I was disappointing to discover I will need to reach into the evaporator cabinet, and braze fittings onto the stubs to increase to the line sizes required. To me, this is sloppy manufacturing. You know what the line size needs to be. Why not give me some nice flare connections in the size I need? That way I wont be trying to braze inside a little metal box with an acetylene torch.

Thank you for your feedback. Flare connections are much more leak prone and have been phased out over the years, replaced by fully brazed connections. This is driven by the EPA and the focus on minimizing refrigerant leaks into the atmosphere. The stubs inside the unit allow flexibility in routing the lines. Adapters and bushings are commonly used in refrigeration piping.
